The world is a great place, and it's home to beautiful animals, plants and some natural wonders. Still, there is another thing the makes our planet uglier each day: plastic containers for to go food. These containers are almost everywhere in restaurants and most homes. They seem innocent and practical, but in fact these are polluting our planet to a great extent. There are already far too many reasons why traditional plastic containers release potent greenhouse emissions and how we may look for better, more environmentally friendly substitutes.
TAKEOUT PLASTIC CONTAINERS ARE MADE OF THAT STUFF CALLED PLASTIC. Because it breaks down readily, plastic is bad for the environment. That means that when we throw plastic away, it stays in the ground for forever! These plastic containers are a single-use product, as is the case when you get takeout food and then throw them away. That is a problem as those containers go into landfills where they sit and take forever to biodegrade.
Plastic containers not only crowd up space in landfills, but can also actively harm animals. Animals sometimes eat the containers by mistake, they think it's food and can become sick. Sometimes, animals get trapped in plastic, causing trauma and sometimes death. Plastic is also made from oil, a resource that the Earth has been losing faster and faster. If we continue to use so much plastic then the oil will run out and this may create even more consequences for the environment.
Fortunately, single-use plastic containers aren't your only option when it comes to takeout. More sustainable alternatives are using containers made of biodegradable materials, such as bamboo or sugarcane. These resources are biodegradable, and hence can degrade overtime naturally as it is environment friendly. Alternatively, consider eco containers created from recycled materials. These are created using the old plastic containers converted into new ones We can also help the planet by avoiding producing new plastic and reusing already existent materials.
When you order food delivered or takeout, there are a million other steps that go into allowing such services, so many it would likely surprise us all. Simple as bringing your own container from home. If you're heading out to grab the food anyways this is super easy, and even when ordering delivery you can still do just that. Always let the restaurant know in advance that you plan to bring your own container. That way they can make your lunch a plastic free one.
One other easy way to decrease plastic from takeout packaging is by requesting the restaurant leave out any excess packing material that isn't strictly necessary. Instead, for instance if you are ordering a sandwich you can tell them to give the plastic bag and wrapper. It will save plastic when your order is dispatched. Lastly, look for restaurants that serve your food in compostable containers. Nowadays a lot of restaurants are trying to do better, so it is worth the effort doing some research in your region as well.
A growing number of individuals believe it is time for an alternative to those plastic takeout containers. Several businesses now provide eco-friendly packaging choices consisting of bamboo or sugarcane containers. They are far friendlier on the environment. Some cities and states are also beginning to address the plastic containers that takeout is often comprised of. In some cases, specific cities have laws on the books mandating restaurants use green-friendly containers to-go or they offer tax breaks and/or other rerouting city funding.
